Stellenbosch FC 1-0 SuperSport United: Sinkala opens his account as Barker’s men move into Top 8 bracket
Nathan Sinkala netted a second-half goal as Stellenbosch FC stunned SuperSport United 1-0 in a league match which was played at Cape Town City Stadium on Friday night.
This was the Zambia international’s first goal since joining the Western Cape-based side in the January transfer window.
For SuperSport United, the result means chances of them winning the league are minimal as they still sit in fourth position and 11 points behind log leaders Kaizer Chiefs after 22 league games.
Stellenbosch managed to keep SuperSport United at bay in the first-half, leading to a cagey first 45 minutes with goalscoring chances few and far between.
Steve Barker made three changes to the side that lost to Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup with Lee Langeveldt, Marc van Heerden and Iqraam Rayners all cracking the nod.
Kaitano Tembo gave Thatayone Ditlhokwe a start in this game as he looked to see what the Botswana international could offer.
The game started off at a slow pace as Matsatsantsa struggled to impose themselves on the game.
The visitors waited until the 30th minute to make a meaningful impact through a free-kick but they couldn’t get the ball past the Matsatsantsa back wall.
Sipho Mbule nearly found the back of the net with a header from inside the box minutes after but his attempt sailed over the top.
Both teams never gave up in the closing stages of the first 45 minutes but fans would feel robbed that neither side went into the interval with a goal to their name.
SuperSport had a chance to open the scoring five minutes after the restart but it wasn’t to be as the Zimbabwe international failed to hit the back of the net as Langerveldt made a great block.
The home side then broke the deadlock five minutes later as Sinkala fired past Ronwen Williams from a Stellies corner to make it 1-0.
This was the Zambia international’s first goal since joining Barker’s men during the January transfer window.
Barker realised the game was over in the final 15 minutes as he introduced Kristopher Bergman for Asavela Mbekile to try and shut the back door.
Ultimately, Stellies racked up another win to move up to seventh on the log while Tembo’s charges suffered yet another defeat to remain fourth on the standings.
